villas, apartments or studios for the exclusive use of the renter, offered as a rental to a short-term clientele during a stay of typically one day, one week or one month, and who does not establish residency at this location (art D324-1 of the Tourist code).

Furnished tourist accommodation is subject to categorisation according to a rating table operating with a point system, like other classified commercial tourist accommodation.
The objective of the new standards is to reinforce competition in the sector and improve qualitative and commercial performance. They establish five categories: 1*, 2*, 3*, 4*, 5* and set out the new quality requirements for service, checked every five years on the basis of a visit by
a qualified organisation.
